Biorepository informed consent Video

Visualizing Healthcare Procedures

Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center’s Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute (CBDI) is a highly regarded unit within the healthcare industry. For 9+ years, CBDI and The Live Well Collaborative have created a number of animated videos to help simplify complex medical concepts so that patients and families can have a better understanding of their healthcare journey. In collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital staff, I assisted in synthesizing a biorepository informed consent document and eventually animating a short video to accompany the lengthy 6 page documentation.

Research & script

breaking down the document

The process began with analyzing and synthesizing the informed consent document into a script proposal. The document information contained many complicated terminology and needed simplification to enhance patient understanding.

After the script was cleared by the Internal Review Board (IRB), storyboards were sketched to begin visualizing the information contained within the script.

Animating the story

Storyboards were continuously drafted as the animation progressed. An animatic was created to give a rough first look at what the pacing of the video would look like when conjoined with the script narration. The animation underwent a number of iterative stages to ensure the pacing, communication and visualization were coherent and accurate before a final review from the IRB.

Now, the video is shared with patients and families to enhance their understanding of CCHMC’s tissue biorepository. With an increased understanding of the process and needs for additional tissue sampling, CCHMC hopes to grow their biorepository enrollment numbers, continuing their legacy as a pioneer of children’s hospitals across the nation.
